Rapidus, Japan’s innovative semiconductor manufacturer, has announced significant progress towards its 2nm process node production. During the opening ceremony of SEMICON Japan on December 11, Chairman Tetsuro Higashi expressed confidence in the company's trial production line for 2nm chips.

The Japanese government is taking significant strides to boost its domestic semiconductor manufacturing industry, committing $1.3 billion (200 billion yen) in funding for chipmaker Rapidus in fiscal 2025. This move is aimed at stimulating further investment and financing from the private sector, with Rapidus aiming to achieve mass production of 2nm chips by 2027.

On November 12, Infineon released its fiscal year 2024 fourth-quarter earnings report along with its full-year revenue results.

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), global semiconductor sales in the third quarter of 2024 increased by 23.2% year-on-year and 10.7% quarter-on-quarter. This year, AI, big data, and electric vehicles have driven the rapid growth of the semiconductor industry. Countries such as China, the U.S., India, South Korea, Japan, the EU, and Southeast Asia are heavily investing in the semiconductor industry, seeking greater control over the chip supply chain and a favorable position in the global semiconductor market. Recently, new initiatives were announced by the EU and Japan to boost their semiconductor strategies.

On November 11, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced a plan for the Japanese government to provide at least 10 trillion yen (approximately $65 billion) by fiscal year 2030 to support the semiconductor and artificial intelligence industries.
